چکیده

Speciation modeling is an essential tool to estimate the chemical composition of an aqueous sample and to assess the bioavailability and potential risks associated with metal contamination. It is also an indispensable alternative for quantifying the metal speciation when analytical techniques are not available. In this study, we tested the effectiveness of two models, WinHumicV and the Non-Ideal Competitive Adsorption (NICA)-Donnan model, in predicting the amount of Cd 2C and Pb, which were originally measured by anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). In general, with its default parameters, WinHumicV satisfactorily estimated the free Cd concentrations. For Pb, at high pH the model predictions were lower than the ASV measurements. The discrepancy between the measured and predicted free Pb concentrations may be attributed to the uncertainty of stability constants in WHAM model V for metaleDOC interactions, or the possible overestimation of free metals by ASV at high pH. Using the published generic parameters for fulvic acid (FA), the consistent NICA-Donnan model also made predictions comparable to the experimental data when Al and Fe competition was taken into account in the model. The agreement of model predictions and experimental data demonstrates that both models provide reasonable predictions of the metal speciation in soil solutions. However, the results stress the requirement of estimates or measurements of Al and Fe concentrations in soil solution speciation to provide reasonable estimates of trace element speciation. 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Measuring and modeling zinc and cadmium binding by humic acid.

Free metal ions in aqueous and terrestrial systems strongly influence bioavailability and toxicity. Most analytical techniques determine the total metal concentration, including the metal ions bound by dissolved organic matter. Ion activity can be measured with ion-specific electrodes (ISEs) for some metals, but an electrode for Zn is not commercially available. As a result, very few data are a...

Modeling of metal binding in tropical Fluvisols and Acrisols treated with biosolids and wastewater.

There is growing concern about the accumulation of metals in tropical agricultural soils. In this study, experimental results from batch studies were used to test whether multi-surface geochemical models could describe metal binding in selected Vietnamese soils. The multi-surface models considered metal binding to iron hydroxides (using the diffuse layer model), organic matter (Stockholm Humic ...

Evaluation of background geochemical speciation of heavy metals in overburden topsoil of bituminous sand deposit area, Ondo state, Nigeria

Metals are ubiquitous within the earth crust. However, the exceptional high-level concentration of heavy metals in the soil due to natural or anthropogenic activities and the chemical forms in which they exist determine the level of risk they portend to the environment. This work was aimed at determining the background level of the presence of seven priority toxic metals (Cr, Ni, Pb, As, Cd, Cu...

Comparison of methods for copper free ion activity determination in soil solutions of contaminated and background soils

In many cases bioavailability and toxicity of cationic metals in soils is determined by the free metal ion (FMI) activity in soil solution. Recently methods were developed that relate biological effects to FMI activity. The use, validation and further development of such approaches require determination of FMI activities in soil. FMI activity determination is, however, prone to methodological a...
